Vintage golliesGollies have been around for many years and were originally called golliwogs. As they are a type of rag doll, many old gollies were home-made. However many toy manufacturers also made gollies. Three vintage tagged examples are shown here.
The handsome fellow to the right was made by Dean's Childsplay Toys Ltd in England in about the late 1960s/early 70s. He has his original hang tag and also has a fabric Dean's Gwentoy label sewn into the back seam of his body. He measures 43 cm in height.
This golly has been well played with but I think it adds to his character. He measures 33 cm in height and has his original Merrythought fabric label sewn to the underside of one foot. He dates to the mid 1960s.
This type of unusual looking golly with its mask face was made in New Zealand in about the 1950s. Many Australian manufacturers made similar looking gollies in the 1950s as well. He measures 41 cm in height and has his original fabric label sewn into the back seam of one leg.
