Four faced German baby dollNot only is this doll unusually large for a multi-faced doll at 45 cm in height, it is also unusual in that it has four faces instead of the usual two or three found on the majority of multi-faced dolls. It is therefore quite a rarity. The body is a German composition baby body with a push button that rotates the head a quarter turn in order to change the faces. Access to the mechanism is through a door cut into the doll's back. The head is composition and three of the faces have fixed glass eyes. The outfit is all original and the front of the dress has a stain from the push button that rotates the head. The inside of the bonnet has a stiffened lining that keeps the bonnet wide enough so that the head can rotate within it. There's is no maker's mark on this doll. The Colemans Collector's Encyclopedia of Dolls Vol II says that in 1908 the Sonneberg Museum had a four faced doll which they attributed to Carl Bergner in that year. It may well be that this is the model they refer to.
