Help please - identification of vintage dog

Postby Kathryn » Sun Nov 15, 2009 11:56 am

Hi

It's usually me answering the questions on dolls so it's my turn to get help! I've recently purchased a soft toy dog (a spaniel I think) and would appreciate any help identifying his maker. He's 25 cm tall to the top of his head and 33 cm from nose to tip of tail. He's unjointed but he's a nice doggy shape so I think he's probably by a good maker. His fur (which looks like mohair) is black with a few specks of ginger, although I think the lighter flecks in his hair are from old age (it happens to us all!). He has bulbous brown glass eyes with black centres and his nose stitching is vertically stitched with a horizontal thread across the top of his nose. He wears a red leather collar which looks to have some age to it so could be original. I removed his collar and underneath found the remnants of a paper/fabric tag which was attached to his neck with a loop of thread and would have hung from his neck. It's only a tiny fragment but could be a good clue as to the maker. I've pictured it below and it looks green in the photo but is more of a turquoise colour. I was told he was a mascot for the Maungaturoto Rugby Club many years ago and that he's about 70 or 80 years old (which if true would date him to the 1930s or 40s). If you know which company made him please let me know.

Thanks, Kathryn

He's just gorgeous! Am sure he's a spaniel, and he's too detailed to be a home-made job. Wish Gloria Finnerty was still with us, she loved such bods. Will try to think of someone who might know- H.
