Bru two faced candy container doll

This interesting two faced doll dates to the 1880s.  She was made by the French firm of Bru.

Bru made a variety of novelty dolls and as well as the novelty of having two faces that swivel around, this doll also has another interesting feature in that she was originally a candy container.  Bru two-faced heads of this type were also put onto other types of bodies, both novelty and the standard bebe type.  This rarer candy container type doll has a hollow cardboard torso into which candies or chocolates would have originally been housed.  Her whole legs are bisque and she has wonderfully moulded boots with painted candy stripe socks.  Her arms are beautifully moulded too with delicate blushing.

Her faces have painted eyes and are very expressive.  I think a lot of thought went into the painting of this model as her crying face is quite blushed, just like a crying child would get quite red in the face.

Her bonnet and clothing appear antique so could be original (though the poor thing is just wearing her undergarments!).  She measures 40 cm tall.
