American composition five-faced doll Until I came across
this doll, I didn't know that five faced dolls existed! She appears to be
American-made and measures 43 cm tall, has a composition head, lower arms and a
cloth body that is stuffed with sawdust. Her clothing appears to be
original, as is her glued on mohair hair.
The manufacturer is a mystery although she is marked on her leg with an ink stamp, only some of which can be deciphered: THE ????? DOLL I think it may read 1929 but I can't be entirely sure on that.
The way they've managered to fit five faces on one head is to put a nose and mouth in between each eye. That means in order to change her face you rotate her head half a face. Each painted eye becomes either a left or right eye on one of her faces. For instance her sleeping eyes each form part of a winking face. On one of her winking faces she has her tongue sticking out!
